Application Notes for E2O Communications Small Form-Factor Pluggable
(SFP) Transceivers

Introduction
This set of Application Notes is intended as a guide to assist the system designer with integrating
an E2O EM Series Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) fiber optic transceiver into their network
system. Refer to Table 1 for a listing of E2O transceiver Part Nos. covered by this Application
Note. Please refer to the data sheets for product description, features, performance
specifications, and ordering options. Included in this document is a schematic showing the
recommended system interface circuit for the transceiver to aid in PC (host) board design.

Optical and Electrical Interconnections
The transceiver uses the industry standard duplex LC or MT-RJ optical fiber connector and is
compatible with the industry standard RFT connector and cage. Refer to Table 2 for a listing of
Pinout descriptions for the RFT electrical connector. The SFP is a hot pluggable module. The
connector pads on the transceiver PCB mate with the connector on the host in the following
sequence: ground first, power second, and signals third. The 20 connector pins each establishes
contact in either sequence 1, 2, or 3.
The system user provides PECL data to the differential inputs of the transmitter on Pins 18 (Data
Non-inverted) and 19 (Data Inverted). The receiver provides differential output data back to the
system on Pins 13 (Data Non-inverted) and 12 (Data Inverted).
