With the proliferation of USB peripheral devices in the point-of-sale (POS) industry, integrators face the challenge of creating an elegant, yet cost-effective retail system that can handle the additional power voltage required for many USB devices like printers, signature capture devices, and bar-code scanners. USB Plus Power, or powered USB, technology was developed as an alternative to externally-powered USB devices. Its unique cabling allows USB devices to receive power from the PC instead of external power supply bricks, maintaining the Plug and Play end user experience typical of USB connectivity.

The USB Plus Power Series makes it easy to add powered USB ports to a standard, low-cost PC, transforming a small footprint CPU into a high-performance retail system. Each solution offers four powered USB ports that are compatible with both standard and powered USB devices. Hubport/4+ is an externally powered hub that connects to a standard USB port. Hubport/PCI+, a card solution, is available in both internally powered and externally powered versions. It utilizes power balancing technology to provide maximum power to 12 volt and 24 volt peripherals without exhausting the PC’s five or 12-volt power. For added flexibility, Edgeport/42+ also offers two EIA-232 serial DB-9 ports, allowing the connection of powered USB, standard USB and legacy serial devices in a single box.
